The second half of Before Bloom: Reading Early Joyce is devoted to a true little masterpiece, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, published in 1916, whose hero — Stephen Dedalus — will go on to reappear, though somewhat disillusioned, in the opening pages of Ulysses. It is a remarkable first novel whose pages not only echo Joyce’s very own rejection of religion and nationalism and his plunge into exile, but also reveal a subtle self-inflicted irony of an older writer toward his younger, more innocent self. Biographical links aside, Portrait is, above all, a brilliant künstlerroman exploring the very question of why we choose to create and what hardship we inflict upon ourselves in order to pursue such a destiny.
